Aquafilters have been developed to provide safe drinking water for families and communities in developing countries. Biologically contaminated water from wells, rivers, lakes, stored water, or pipes is made safe to drink at the point of use.
They are portable, so Aquafilters can be easily taken to a site and used immediately. When not in use, they can be stored in a secure place .
Aquafilters are operated by hand pumping, and do not require an electrical supply. They do not need chemicals or other consumable elements to clean the water, and they will last for years.
Built into the design of the Aquafilters are ways to keep them clean and unclogged, so there is no need for replacement parts.

The Aquafilter Community arrives in a box which can be used for containing dirty water. When the Aquafilter is operated, crystal clear and biologically safe water is produced.
It delivers 300 litres an hour, so for example, in a school of 600 children, pumping the Aquafilter for 2 hours provides each of the children with 1
litre of drinking water.
In our experience of Aquafilters in schools, the filter usually stays in the compound, but in villages it is often taken to the water source where people traditionally gather for social interaction. Using the Aquafilter in turn, the villagers can then carry clean water back to their homes.

The Aquafilter Family is normally clamped onto the side of a bucket or cut-down jerry can. Dirty water is poured into the bucket and when the Aquafilter is pumped, clean water is delivered directly into a drinking cup.
It produces safe drinking water on demand at a rate of 1 litre a minute, so one drink of around one third of a litre takes about 20 seconds. To put this into a daily context, the usual requirement of 2 litres of drinking water per person means that the Aquafilter Family can provide for an extended family group of about 30 people.

The Aquafilter Family is also used in
emergency situations. One filter is included in every Rotary Aquabox which is filled with survival essentials and sent out at short notice to disaster areas. When the survival items are removed, the empty box is intended for use as a container for dirty water. The Aquafilter, clamped onto the Aquabox, is then used to provide clean drinking water.
Aquafilters are providing safe drinking water at the point of use, helping people to rebuild their lives, not just in the aftermath of a disaster, but also into the medium term.
